Intrerar / Acular, 2022
SLA Resin, Wood, Felt, Branches
Intrerar / Acular, is an installation that displays a shrine of two hands. My reliance on my hands has taken on new salience as I complete my recovery from a nerve condition which has affected my hands over the past two years. The hands are also
The 3D printed hands were sculpted in ZBrush and Nomad then printed with an SLA resin 3D printer. The two hands were painted gold then placed within wood enclosures.
This piece is an expression of my reverence of hands. I value hands not only for there practical utility but also in their significance as a branch of consciousness. In meditation one can move their sensory awareness to the tip of their finger. In creative work the hands become an extended aspect of the brain (here I think about Chalmers’ Extended Mind). The hands hold the mind as much as the head does, yet most of the time they are quotidian.
This piece, like others I have created this year, is a practice in personal mythology. In this piece I participate in a dialogue artists have created around a type of cargo cultism. I also view this work as a departure from a type of ironic detachment that is in vogue. Intrerar / Acular is a critique of a commentary culture driven by the reification of cynicism and the privileging of novelty. The critique in some ways participates in these trends as I embrace new technologies but I also resist them through an authentic exploration of impulse and inspiration.
